Understanding Tools vs. Supplies

Before we start, it’s important to distinguish between tools and supplies. My Junk Journal tools are the durable, non-depleting items like scissors and paper trimmers, while my Junk Journal supplies are consumable items like glue and ink. For this post, we’ll focus on my favorite tools—those essential items that help you bring your junk journal to life.

Junk Journal Tools for Beginners: Start Where You Are

Starting a junk journal doesn’t require expensive tools. Many essentials can already be found around your house. Here are the must-haves:

  1. Scissors
A versatile pair of scissors is vital. If you enjoy intricate work, consider precision scissors for fussy cutting. Decorative-edge scissors are also great for adding unique touches to your pages.
  2. Paper Trimmer or Craft Knife
A paper trimmer makes cutting paper precise and efficient. Alternatively, a ruler and craft knife can work just as well for beginners.
  3. Bone Folder or Spackle Knife
A bone folder helps create crisp folds, while a spackle knife doubles as a glue spreader. Both are simple tools with multiple uses.
  4. Glue Book
Repurpose an old book as a glue book to protect your workspace when applying adhesives. It’s an eco-friendly and essential tool.
  5. Basic Hole Punch
A standard single-hole punch is perfect for creating tag holes or journal bindings. Over time, you may want to invest in a crop-a-dile for more advanced techniques.
  6. Tweezers and Clips
Tweezers help with precision work, like placing small embellishments. Binder clips hold your pages in place while you work.
  7. Glue
Any glue will do. PVA, White School Glue…use what you have!

Expanding Your Toolbox: Nice-to-Have Items

Once you’ve mastered the basics, you may want to explore tools that enhance your creative possibilities:

  • Stencils and Stamps
Add depth and texture to your pages with stencils and cling stamps. They’re great for creating layered designs.
  • Punches
Circle, corner rounder, and tag punches can save time and add polish to your creations.
  • Sizzix Big Shot
If you enjoy working with die cuts and embossing folders, a die-cutting machine like the Sizzix Big Shot is an excellent investment.

Tips for Beginners

If you’re new to junk journaling, remember to start small. Many of the best junk journal tools for beginners are inexpensive and easily accessible. Most you likely already own.

Over time, as you grow into the craft, you can build a more extensive collection tailored to your style and the type of crafting you like to do.

Final Thoughts

Junk journaling is a beautiful way to repurpose everyday items into creative works of art and show off your creative expression without feeling the pressure of perfection. Remember…it is only paper!

Whether you’re just starting out or refining your craft, the right tools can make the process enjoyable and efficient but you can start with what you already have and grow from there.

Explore your options, experiment with what you have, and let your creativity shine. That is the most important thing.
